Charter Activations

The International Charter was activated for the first time on 17th November 2000 when Slovenia suffered a major landslide.

In its first year of operation, the Charter responded to 11 calls for activation. Today, the Charter has responded to over 255 calls and the number of times it is activated grows increasingly year on year.

The Charter categorises activations by cause:

  • Solid Earth: Earthquake, Landslide, Volcano
  • Weather/Atmospheric: Storm/Hurricane*, Ice/Snow Hazard, Flood/Ocean Wave**, Fire
  • Technological: Oil Spill, Other
